32 Then King David said, “Summon to me (A)Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” And they came into the king’s presence. 33 And the king said to them, “Take with you (B)the servants of your lord, and have my son Solomon ride on my own mule, and bring him down to (C)Gihon. 34 And have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet (D)anoint him there as king over Israel, and (E)blow the trumpet and say, ‘(F)Long live King Solomon!’ 35 Then you shall come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne, and he shall be king in my place; for I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah.” 36 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king and said, “Amen! May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, say the same. 37 (G)Just as the Lord has been with my lord the king, so may He be with Solomon, and (H)make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David!”

Solomon Anointed King

38 So (I)Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, (J)the Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to (K)Gihon. 39 And Zadok the priest then (L)took the horn of oil from the tent and (M)anointed Solomon. Then they (N)blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “(O)Long live King Solomon!” 40 And all the people went up after him, and the people were playing on flutes and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth [a]shook at their noise.

41 Now Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard this as they finished eating. When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “Why is the [b]city making such an uproar?” 42 While he was still speaking, behold, (P)Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came. Then Adonijah said, “Come in, for (Q)you are a valiant man and you bring good news.” 43 But Jonathan replied to Adonijah, “On the contrary! Our lord King David has made Solomon king! 44 The king has also sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites; and they have mounted him on the king’s mule. 45 Furthermore, Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon, and they have come up from there rejoicing, (R)so that the city is going wild. This is the noise which you have heard. 46 Besides, (S)Solomon has even taken his seat on the throne of the kingdom. 47 Moreover, the king’s servants came to bless our lord King David, saying, ‘May (T)your God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and his throne greater than your throne!’ And (U)the king bowed himself on the bed. 48 The king has also said this: ‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who (V)has granted one to sit on my throne today while my own eyes see it.’”

49 Then all the guests of Adonijah trembled and got up, and each went on his way. 50 Adonijah also was afraid of Solomon, and he got up, and went, and (W)took hold of the horns of the altar. 51 Now it was reported to Solomon, saying, “Behold, Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon, for behold, he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘May King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’” 52 And Solomon said, “If he is a worthy man, (X)not one of his hairs will fall to the ground; but if wickedness is found in him, he will die.” 53 So King Solomon sent men, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and prostrated himself before King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”

So David [a]gave orders to gather (A)the strangers who were in the land of Israel, and (B)he set stonecutters to cut out stones to build the house of God. And David (C)prepared large quantities of iron [b]to make the nails for the doors of the gates and for the clamps, and more (D)bronze than could be weighed; and timbers of cedar beyond number, for (E)the Sidonians and Tyrians brought large quantities of cedar timber to David. David said, “My son (F)Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the Lord shall be exceedingly magnificent, famous, and glorious throughout the lands. Therefore I now will make preparations for it.” So David made ample preparations before his death.

Solomon Commanded to Build the Temple

Then (G)he called for his son Solomon, and commanded him to build a house for the Lord God of Israel. David said to Solomon, “(H)My son, [c]I had intended to build a house for the name of the Lord my God. But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘(I)You have shed much blood and have [d]waged great wars; you shall not build a house to My name, because you have shed so much blood on the earth before Me. Behold, a son will be born to you, who shall be a man of rest, and (J)I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side; for (K)his name will be [e]Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days. 10 (L)He shall build a house for My name, and he shall be My son and I will be his Father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’ 11 Now, my son, (M)the Lord be with you that you may be successful, and build the house of the Lord your God just as He has spoken concerning you. 12 (N)Only the Lord give you discretion and understanding, and put you in charge of Israel, so that you may (O)keep the Law of the Lord your God. 13 (P)Then you will prosper, if you are careful to [f]follow the statutes and the ordinances which the Lord commanded Moses concerning Israel. (Q)Be strong and courageous, do not fear nor be dismayed. 14 Now behold, [g]with great pains I have prepared for the house of the Lord (R)a hundred thousand [h]talents of gold and a million talents of silver, and (S)bronze and iron beyond measure, for [i]they are in great quantity; I have also prepared timber and stone, and you may add to that. 15 Moreover there are many workmen with you, stonecutters, masons of stone, and carpenters; and all of them are skillful in every kind of work. 16 Of the gold, silver, bronze, and iron there is no limit. Arise and work, and may (T)the Lord be with you.”

17 (U)David also commanded all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon, saying, 18 “Is the Lord your God not with you? And (V)has He not given you rest on every side? For He has handed over to me the inhabitants of the land, and the land is subdued before the Lord and before His people. 19 Now (W)set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God; then arise, and build the sanctuary of the Lord God, (X)so that you may bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the holy vessels of God into the house that is to be built (Y)for the name of the Lord.”

Discipleship Tested

25 Now [a]large crowds were going along with Him, and He turned and said to them, 26 (A)If anyone comes to Me and does not [b]hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 Whoever does not (B)carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who are watching it will begin to ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build, and was not able to finish!’ 31 Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and (C)consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to face the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 Otherwise, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and requests terms of peace. 33 So then, none of you can be My disciple who (D)does not [c]give up all his own possessions.

34 “Therefore, salt is good; but (E)if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be [d]seasoned? 35 It is useless either for the soil or the manure pile, so it is thrown out. (F)The one who has ears to hear, [e]let him hear.”

The Lost Sheep

15 Now all the (G)tax collectors and [f]sinners were coming near [g]Jesus to listen to Him. And both the Pharisees and the scribes began to complain, saying, “This man receives sinners and (H)eats with them.”

And so He told them this parable, saying, (I)What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the other ninety-nine in the [h]open pasture and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he puts it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost!’ I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

The Lost Coin

“Or what woman, if she has ten [i]silver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found the coin which I had lost!’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is joy (J)in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
